The show stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, one of a group of "Dolls" or "Actives," a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Whedon came up with the idea for the show while having lunch with Dushku, which was one of the first topics he discussed during our conversation. We also chatted about Dollhouse debuting midseason next January, where it will be paired with 24 , and how it is part of a new FOX campaign -- along with J.
Abrams Fringe -- called "Remote-Free TV", which will find the show airing with far less commercials than a typical network series.
Make sure to also check out our other articles on what Joss Whedon had to say about the possibility of more Buffy the Vampire Slayer and his online project Doctor Horrible. Have you watched Dollhouse? So back into the writer cave I went, wondering why I put up with this when I can make literally dozens of dollars making internet movies. Why I do put up with this is divided into three parts. Whedon also took the blame for these initial problems: "The fact of the matter is that I've made some rookie mistakes — actually worse than rookie mistakes — about what I was doing with the show, especially considering that I've worked with Fox before.
We did that and now things are running smoothly, but whew, doggy. Fox announced the Friday-timeslot in November , with Whedon being one of the proponents of this decision: "If I were an executive, I would have put it on Friday too, honestly, and not as a dig.
The people who want this will find it, and hopefully more will as well. Dare I say we're reaching for something more philosophical? Am I allowed to say philosophical? Or does that just mean my show will fail? When Fox renewed the show for a second season, Whedon was finishing production on The Cabin in The Woods , an upcoming horror film he co-wrote with Drew Goddard.
After he "wanted to die of tiredness" because of that, the work on the second Dollhouse season started on June 1, "About two hours after starting to talk to the writers about story, I was back with such a vengeance, and so energized and so pumped because we really understand the show now. We understand what works, and what didn't work so well or what we weren't so thrilled about. We don't have the onus of trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders.
We can just be ourselves. And so the stories we're breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody's on-board in the room, and it's never flowed better. Whedon is credited as creator and executive producer throughout the whole show. He also wrote and directed " Echo ", the original pilot, which is not considered a canonical part of Season 1.

With its more realistic setting and intelligent exploration of the side-effects of new technology, it has much more of a hard-SF feel than Firefly , and while there are undoubtedly bumps along the way — and one or two contentious twists near the end — if you can look past these and stay the course, it makes for a really rewarding viewing experience.
